STORY

The bridge that became a symbol.

The Black Bridge became a favourite meeting place for Laško's couples, walkers and young people, a recurring motif for painters of Laško views, and a distinctive local symbol.

At the beginning of the 20th century, a simple wooden footbridge was built across the Žikovca stream just before it flows into the Savinja. Floodwater carried it away several times.

In 1923 Edvard Ebersberg, owner of the first artificial-slate factory in Styria, had a new bridge built as a form of advertising. It was covered with black artificial slate produced at his factory in Laško, which gave the bridge its name.
