New Hospital
Where quiet care for fellow human beings gave way to the first steps of a brewing tradition from which the legend of Laško beer was born.

New Hospital
The large two-storey building is U-shaped. Arcades supported by square-profile pillars survive on the courtyard side, and some ground-floor and cellar rooms are still vaulted.
Because the Old Hospital founded by Hans Meusenreiter did not fulfil its intended mission, in 1560 Janez Krstnik Valvasor built the New Hospital on the site of today's building at Valvasorjev trg 1. He personally supervised its work. In his will he endowed the hospital generously and left precise instructions for how it should operate and how one of his nephews should manage it after his death, so that the institution would not be corrupted and his property would be used to care for the sick and poor and to provide for their burial.
Between the Old and New Hospitals stood a hospital church dedicated to St Elizabeth of Thuringia, accessible from both institutions. Janez Krstnik Valvasor, benefactor of the New Hospital, was buried there. After the suppression of the Minorite monks and the decline of Valvasor's hospital, the church was closed and abandoned.
The hospital operated here until the beginning of the 19th century. The building was then bought by Franz Geyer, who in 1825 established a small craft brewery there. Over time, this grew into what is today Slovenia's largest brewery.
Today the building houses the Laško Tourist Information Centre, B&B accommodation and a pub.
