Market Granary

The building, known to most residents as Kislinger House after its owner between the two world wars, was once an outbuilding and integral part of the manor complex. It served for collecting and storing payments in kind levied by the estate administration at Weichselberg Manor.

Its connection with the manor is visible in the side façade, which has the same type of arcades, while the ground floor of the former granary is marked by a richly designed stone portal dated 1808.

The building houses the Laško Museum, reopened in autumn 2007 when it celebrated the centenary of its founding. At the initiative of Laško humanist and naturalist Karl Valentinič, the museum had been established in 1907 in his house at Aškerčev trg 10 under the auspices of the Beautification Society.

Through exhibitions titled Laško — A Journey Through Time, Brewing and Spa Tourism, and Geology of the Laško Area, the Laško Museum presents the history, natural heritage and economic development of the area from prehistory onwards. Its varied collection vividly documents local life. Many objects are common types found in other museums or private collections, but some are unique in Slovenian museum holdings. Through fortunate circumstances and the awareness of former custodians, these objects survived and are preserved only in Laško Museum. Temporary exhibitions on the ground floor and an ‘open depot’ in the attic, presenting the most interesting local stories, further enrich the cultural programme.
