Lilie Manor

The large Renaissance manor was built in 1675 by Johann Weikhard Vetter, Count von der Lilie. With its dominant mass and position, the manor substantially changed the townscape. When it was built, together with its farm buildings and garden it occupied a considerably larger part of the town than it does today. As Laško expanded, the manor grounds gradually shrank. Today only the main two-storey L-shaped building survives; together with auxiliary buildings it encloses a rectangular courtyard.

The western wing has arcades on both the ground and upper floors. Below, they rest on rectangular stone pillars with capitals; above, on round columns. The principal entrance to the courtyard is in the northern wing through a semicircular stone portal made of yellowish sandstone. The richly articulated portal is surmounted on the outer façade by a large coat-of-arms plaque of the Vetter von der Lilie family. Interestingly, the dates on the coat of arms and on the portal are different.

Until the great fire of 1840, the building had a large tower above the castle chapel and two smaller roof turrets. Despite the efforts of teacher Flis, who found an abandoned fire pump while fleeing the blaze and began fighting the fire himself, the building was damaged so severely that the towers were demolished during reconstruction.

Just as the offices of the Laško estate once stood here, the building today houses the Municipality of Laško and the local administrative unit. Its courtyard is one of the main venues of the annual Beer and Flowers Festival.
