Old Town Hall

The house at Orožnov trg 7 is historically one of the square's most interesting buildings. Built in the 16th century, it retains many architectural elements from that period. Like its two neighbouring buildings, it has an upper floor on the Orožen Square side but only a ground floor towards Mestna ulica. At the transition from the square to the street the building is slightly offset and both corners there are chamfered. A small late-Gothic stone window appears in the recess. A corner wheel guard, the so-called ‘ratštos’, is heavily buried but still clearly visible.

A stone portal of yellowish sandstone marks a former entrance to the building. The ground floor is vaulted.

The market-town judge first had his offices in the house, and later it became the seat of the municipality. On market days the ‘market hand’ was displayed on the building as a warning to trade fairly. A pillory once stood on the side opening towards Mestna ulica; Judge Jakob Herman had it removed in 1779.
